The $191,730 winner’s share of the purse made Danjer a millionaire, increasing his career bankroll to $1,064,448 for Frey, Downtime Enterprises LLC, and Billy Smith.
“He got away slow, and Apollitical Pence looked extra good the way he jumped out of there,” said winning rider Cody Smith. “But my horse likes to eyeball a horse in front of him and use that horse as a target to catch. That horse had us daylighted. It’s just a testament to how fast Danjer is.”
Frey, who co-owns and trains the brown gelding, also bred Danjer who has raced in four states. Bred in Oklahoma out of the Take Off Jess mare Shez Jess Toxic, Frey’s charge has now won 11 of 21 outings, including seven at the classic 440-yard distance. He concluded his 2020 season with wins in the Albuquerque Fall Championship-G1 and the Bank of America Challenge Championship-G1, both at The Downs at Albuquerque.
“Indescribable how I feel,” Dean Fry said following the win. “It was such a good feeling. Going to be hard trying to sleep tonight.”
Multiple graded stakes winner Apollitical Pence (Apollitical Jess-Send City) finished a
game second after leading most of the way under Francisco Calderon. The sorrel 5-year-old geld- ing is owned by Dunn Ranch and was bred in Oklahoma by Dunn Ranch/Womack Cavender Farms. Monty Arrossa conditions the millionaire and 10-time winner who, like Danjer, was making just his second start of the year, after his win in the Mighty Deck Three Stakes-RG2 on March 9.
Mi Amor Secreto (The Louisiana Cartel- Streakin in Secret) and jockey Juan Pulido finished in third place for owner Carol Ann Mays and trainer Fidencio Jimenez. A multiple Graded stakes winner himself, Mi Amor Secreto picked up yet another stakes-placing and added $35,151 to his coffers to bring his lifetime earnings to $639,495.
Perrys Double Down (Mr Jess Perry- Double Down Darling), Midday News (FDD Dynasty-Summer Love Song), JK Wildcat
Red (One Dashing Eagle-Shaky Girl), Apollitical Papa (Apollitical Jess-Sissys Tres Girl), Hooked On Jordan (Fast Prize Jordan- Hooked On Laveaux) and Valiant Tiberias (Valiant Hero-American Feature) completed the order of finish.
