2020 SpeedhorSe Broodmare of the Year
SINUOUS
by Larry Thornton
When Whistle Stop Cafe won the 2020 All American Futurity-G1, she was on the way to earning a World Championship. These two titles – All American Futurity winner & World Champion – have allowed us to delve deep into her pedigree. We previously covered her sire Freighttrain B and her dam Sinuous in our October 2020 issue. Our look at Sinuous took us to the history
of her fourth dam, the blue hen mare Fitting Celebration, a key mare in the Bobby Cox breeding program.
But this month, Sinuous takes the spotlight as the 2020 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year. She garnered her title through her 2020 starters, beginning with Whistle Stop Cafe with her World Championship and her All American Futurity win along with a win in the Rainbow Futurity-G1 and Heritage Place Juvenile Stakes. Then came Marfilmio, winning the 2020 Two Rivers Stakes-G3, and Mansory, who was second in the Prairie Dash Stakes, with Veterran and
Meticulus all adding to her produce earnings of $2,054,108 for 2020.
Sinuous is a 2007 mare sired by Mr
Jess Perry and out of No Fees by Runaway Winner. She is bred and owned by Bobby D. Cox. She was stakes placed with a third in the Heritage Place Derby-G1 and a second in the Dash For Cash Derby-G2. She was also a stakes finalist in the Remington Park Derby-G2 and the Texas Classic Derby-G1. She won $105,956 from her 12 starts with four wins, three seconds and one third.
So, with Sinuous as our subject, I thought we would start at the end the story and work our way back to today. By starting at the end, we will begin with three horsemen who made a very interesting contribution to the history of this mare. They are Lou Kirk, John Alonzo and Lewis Blackwell.
The role of Lou Kirk sets us up for the rest of the story. The Kirk family, from around Farmington, New Mexico, were ranchers with a love of fast horses. When we
