The Adventure of the Speckled Band
Plot summary
In The Adventure of the Speckled Band, Sherlock Holmes invesJgates the case of a young woman who fears that she'll be murdered.
One day Helen Stoner, the stepdaughter of Sir Grimesby Roylo`, visits Holmes and Watson. Thge youn woman believes that her stepfather killed her sister just before her wedding —she just doesn't know how. Now that Helen is going to be married, she worries that she will meet the same fate.
Holmes agrees to take the case, but before he can leave his home, he receives a visit from a furious Roylo`, who threatens him. Holmes is undeterred and takes the case anyway.
Holmes discovers that Roylo` wants to kill his step daughters in order to maintain control over their inheritance. He sent an indian swamp snake (the speckled band) in their bedroom through the air vents to poison them in their sleep. In the end, the snake turns against Roylo` and he is killed.
The Hound of the Baskervilles
Plot summary
One morning Doctor James MorJmer visits Sherlock Holmes and tells him about the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville. Local people believe that the spectral Hound of the Baskervillee killed the old man. ANer Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead with his face twisted in stark terror, Sir Henry Baskerville asks Sherlock Holmes for his help. The narrator of the story is Holmes’s assistant, Dr. Watson, who is sent to Dartmoor while Holmes remains in London. When he arrives, Watson learns that a prisoner named Selden has escaped from prison. More strange events occur, including the appearance of an unknown figure on the moor. Watson later discovers that the mysterious person is Holmes, who has been conducJng his own invesJgaJon. ANer Holmes arrives, he and Watson discover that the killer is Jack Stapleton, a neighbour who is actually an unknown heir, Rodger Baskerville. Hoping to inherit the family estate, he has plo`ed to kill his relaJves using a giant hound that he has painted with phosphorous to appear sinister. The supersJJous Charles died of a heart a`ack aNer being frightened by the animal. Stapleton also hopes to kill Henry Baskerville but is stopped by Holmes. ANerward Stapleton flees but dies in swamp and Sir Henry is saved.
