Early career
Wri7ng Stevenson became popular
as a novelist in the 1880’s when he published The Treasure Island (1883), The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886), The Master of Ballantrae (1889). His short strories, full od suspence and supernatural, much similar to Poe’s stories, were collected as New Arabian Nights (1882). From 1888 he sailed in the Pacific Ocean visiSng TahiSi, New Zealand and the Samoan Island. In 1890 he established on the island of Opulu in Samoa and took the naSve name of Tusitala (teller of tales). He wrote the collecSon of short stories The beach of Falesa.

Because of his bad health he studied at home when a child and travelled abroad in search of a good climate: he suffered from tubercolosis.
He started studying engineering at Edinburgh University, but he gave it up, and he graduated in law in 1875 and decided to start a career as a writer.
