MATERIALS AUSTRALIA
NSW Branch Technical Meeting
Undergraduate Student Thesis Presentations Source: Alan Hellier
The Materials Australia New South Wales (NSW) Branch hosted the 2018 NSW undergraduate student thesis presentations event on
5 December 2018. During the event, Honours students from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), the University of Sydney (USYD) and the University of Wollongong (UOW) gathered in order to showcase their exciting research work on a range of materials.
A diverse range of topics was
represented, including bulk metallic
glass, semiconducting nanowires, MAX phases, geopolymers, titania thin films, thermal storage and corrosion resistance of
stainless steel, among others.
The students provided a detailed overview of each of their projects, which they
have been completed over the past 12 months, either through a conference-style oral presentation, or a rapid-pitch poster presentation.
The students’ presentation skills and understanding of their research was judged by a panel, consisting of Dr Anna Ceguerra (USYD), Dr Ania Paradowska (ANSTO), Peter Richardson (University of Newcastle), and chief judge Professor Chris Sorrell (UNSW).
The Materials Australia NSW Branch would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the corporate sponsors of prize money for
the event: voestalpine, Liberty, Taylor Ceramic Engineering, Gravitas Technologies and ANSTO. Additionally, all participants
received a one year Materials Australia student membership.
The oral presentation winners were:
• 1stPlace:MiaMaric;UNSW
• 2ndPlace:WilliamJohnDavids;USYD • 3rdPlace:MartinPacak;UNSW
The poster presentation winners were:
• 1st Place: Michelle Yeoh; UNSW
• 2nd Place: Hafsah Indrianita Pratiwi;
UNSW
• 3rdPlace:BryanLim;USYD
Hearty congratulations to all event participants and prize winners. We very much look forward to seeing a new generation of students take part in the 2019 event, to be held later this year.
The second presentation of the evening— traditionally a commercial presentation that compliments Phillip Ormonde Fitzpatrick’s areas of specialisation—was ‘Leveraging IP: Licencing, Spin-out and Hybrids’.
Kim Walker (Partner, Prime Accounting and Business Advisory) gave this presentation, which as usual, complimented the technical presentation very well.
The evening was capped off by a good couple of hours of drinks and nibbles, and the 30 attendees of the night took opportunities to network, and catch up with industry friends.
The Victoria and Tasmania Branch would like to thank Phillip Ormonde Fitzpatrick for hosting this informative and social evening.

Annual End Of Year Function Source: Paul Plater, Photographs: Ping Ping Chung
For the eighth year, the Victorian and Tasmanian Branch held an end of year function as guests of patent attorneys Phillip Ormonde Fitzpatrick. The event is combined to include members from our kindred societies; namely the Australian Ceramics Society,
the Australasian Corrosion Association, and the Australian Foundry Institute.
The topic of this year’s technical presentation was ’The Needs for Bone Implants and Repairs in Australia and the Role of 3D Printing’.
Theis was presented by Dr Ma Qian, Distinguished Professor from the Centre
for Additive Manufacturing and School of Engineering at RMIT. Dr Qian spoke about the effects of the aging population and the demands of medical science to develop long term, rapid, low-cost repair solutions.
Additive manufacturing
is being used to this end, and with encouraging results. Dr Qian described the technical challenges, as well as the integration of materials into the body, such as matching the modulus of bone with
a material of a similar density, which is one of the most challenging aspects.
