This month’s BBQ Profile certainly needs no introduction to anyone in- volved with competition BBQ. His Fa- ther ran a take-out BBQ business in Vienna, Georgia, and our profiled pit- master this month began working in this business when he was nine years old. His Father determined when his meat was properly cooked by visual inspection, smell and when he knew everything was just right. He never used a thermometer and his Father, Jack, was never wrong. His prepara- tions were always perfect. This month will be learn more about the life of Myron Mixon and his many contribu- tions to competition BBQ.
Myron later moved down the road to
Unadilla, Georgia, which is in the same
county. He has operated from there for
most of his life. From here Myron has
gained many accomplishments and added tons contribu- tions to our beloved sport of barbecue during his entire life. Myron has built a facility there to conduct monthly BBQ classes which are booked six months in advance. Jack’s Old South BBQ School is well known throughout the BBQ
World. All of the different pieces of equipment that he uses in both his school and his competitions are avail- able through his store and also to the public. When you see him using some- thing that you think would be helpful to you, it is available through his store.
Myron has designed a line of smokers that are also available through his store. There is also the five cookbooks authored by him, different utensils, cutting boards, and a full line of BBQ and grilling equipment available through his store. He also has a line of rubs, sauces, pellets and many other things that give any BBQ and grilling fan the added help to make their BBQ efforts just a little better in the end.
Since 2016 he has served as Mayor of Unadilla as he gives back to his local community as well as
to BBQ world. Probably the latest accomplishment, and one that Myron is certainly proud of is his recent Grand Cham- pion finish in the whole hog category at the 2021 Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. For this competition the contestants are only allowed to compete in one of the three categories, whole hog, pork shoulder, or ribs. Myron won first place, in the Whole Hog category, which has always been one of his specialties. Memphis in May first does blind judging like most other or- ganizations and this is followed by three judges who make visits to the team site to observe their cooking procedures while judging their entries as well. This is the fifth time he has won the Overall Grand World Championship and all while cooking the whole hog category. Those wins came in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2016, and 2021. He also teaches whole hog cooking in his BBQ classes.
His Father died in 1996, and after years of working for his Father in the BBQ business, Myron decided he wanted to
