1500 + meals were prepared and distributed in socially distanced, COVID safe conditions on Thanks- giving Day.
Coupons were handed out by the Northern Rhode Island Food Bank to those who needed a hot Thanksgiving Day meal. Leaders at the Woonsocket Boys and Girls Club and some local shelters also passed the word.... And it worked. Cars began lining up at the tent located outside GottaQ two hours before the first meal was to be passed out.
Over 600 pounds of turkey, 400 pounds of stuffing, three additional sides and homemade gravy made it into the containers, bagged and topped off with cookies for dessert.
Volunteers plated, packaged and delivered curbside to the cars for families. Shifts were set up, over 50 volunteers helped that cold rainy day and many smiles were made.
Oh, and cookies, you ask? There were about 28 members of the “Cookie Brigade” that managed to produce.... Are you ready? OVER 3500 COOKIES! Our guess is that all the brigade outdid themselves and produced closer to 5000 cookies!
Fast forward to the New Year holiday....
Many of the same volunteers and more came together again over the New Year holiday to prepare a BBQ meal for a local Rhode Island shelter - The McAuley House. Hunger Smoked has delivered to the House over the last few years although this year was different...
The McAuley House was quiet when the food was delivered. The shelter and warmth and smiles that those in need often get from the staff at the House has been taken away because of COVID. Those who come for meals are given a take-out container and sent away; COVID has stopped the McAuley House from being able to open their doors for a warm table, some much needed interaction and car- ing smiles. The McAuley House is still serving as many meals as possible and smiling behind their masks as they continue to do what they can for those in need.
Hunger Smoked and all the volunteers were happy to be a part of so many smiles this season. Special thanks to The BBQ Superstore for once again suppling rubs for the meat; not there in person but they contributed to the spirit of giving.
