 Joule
The gadget we use most is Joule. Pronounced jool, its name comes from the scientific term for a tiny measurement of energy. Joule is about 1.75” wide and 11” tall. It has a strong magnet in the bottom that holds it upright in a steel or enamel pot (note that some stainless steel is not magnetic). It also has a well-designed clip that can hold it onto a pot and another that clamps onto a beer cooler. It can be splashed but not completely submerged. It heats water faster than other models.
The app that controls it is where Joule really shines. It has excellent tutorials, videos, and recipes and the app is frequently updated. You no longer need books with reference tables to select cooking times and temperatures. It has one drawback: There is no display on the device to tell you the water temperature or to control the temperature. It all must be done via smartphone or tablet. That’s not really a problem as long as you and Joule have a connection. But if one of you loses connectivity, it can shut down and your meal can spoil. Click here for more info and to order Joule.
