 The President’s Corner
Happy June CBBQA members,
With the arrival of the new month, and the slow reopening of our state, I am hopeful that we are getting close to actually being able to enjoy in-person competitions again soon. However, until that time I hope to see more virtual contests for members to partici- pate in so that we can keep the competitive edge.
Speaking of virtual competitions, congrats to Son of Smoke on his Grand Championship and 789 BBQ on their Reserve Grand Champi- onship in the virtual chicken and rib contest last month. A special thank you to Craig Yeszin for or- ganizing this virtual event for our members.
It is with a heavy heart that I an- nounce the passing of two BBQ enthusiasts. Alan Dowdy from Lassen BBQ Cookoff in Susanville. Below is an excerpt from his obit- uary:
“Alan had a passion for auto racing, fishing, cooking, gardening, camp- ing, and a good old practical joke every now and then. He loved to share his passions with whoever was interested and willing to listen.
By Steph Franklin
Alan was an upstanding active citi- zen in his community. Throughout his life, Alan served as a coach to many young men and women. As president of the Susanville Little League, Alan was responsible for re- vitalizing Pat Murphy Little League Fields, to ensure the kids of the com- munity had a safe place to learn and grow.
Alan loved to cook, specifically BBQ. He spent time organizing BBQ com- petitions to help raise money for local charities. Alan served on the planning commission for the City of Susanville and helped make deci- sions about the growth of his com- munity. Alan also served as a local leader for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in several dif- ferent capacities.
Alan stood as a role model to those that knew him. He was kind, gener- ous, and loving. He was the man that when called upon, stood with the first and he stood the tallest. He will be forever missed and loved.”
And also the passing of my old teammate, fraternity brother, and great friend, Gilbert (Gil) Ruther- ford. I met Gil in 1985 at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He was a non-traditional student
