Research Committee Report Abraham D. Lee, PT, Ph.D. – Co-Chair
The members of the Research Committee have worked hard thus far to improve what we do:
1) promoting research activities,
2) acknowledging and rewarding individuals being involved in research, and
3) facilitating research activities, and communicating about research results and/or research processes .
Here is the list of what we have accomplished or will be accomplished in the months to come .
 NEWSLETTER PUBLICATION
Since the beginning of 2018, we have published the newsletter, “OPTA Research in Action,” to facilitate the research aspect of the profession for the growth of physical therapy practices
and improvement of health of many consumers of the services of the profession . In June 2020, we published the newsletter, which contained reviews of two original articles and a research abstract . We appreciate contributions by several authors, John W . Connell, Amu DeSilva, and the faculty of Hanover College (David J . Denton, Sharon McFadden, Kerry Volansky, & Gregory M . Kline) . The newsletter also included COVID-19 pandemic resources related to physical therapy . We are appreciative of Andrew Raschke, who spearheaded in reaching out to potential contributors and collecting resources related to COVID-19, making it available for clinicians . Greg Kline has been a great asset for the committee, making the newsletter possible for the last two and a half years .
TRAINING ON REVIEWING
OF THE GRANT PROPOSAL
Recently we held a training session for potential reviewers of research proposals . One of the important missions of the Research Committee
Greetings members of the OPTA Sports SIG . 2020 has been an interesting year so far with many new opportunities to look into virtual options to keep in touch . The Sports SIG has continued to post weekly articles from multiple sources such as JOSPT, BJSM, AJSM, and other sports sites . We are nearing completion of the creation of an OPTA Sports SIG Podcast . We hope to continue to cultivate this over the coming months and years .
is to accept research proposals, review them, and fund investigators for selected proposals . To improve grant review and evaluation of proposals, I presented a lecture on how to review grant proposals, highlighting important points that need to be considered as reviewers evaluate research proposals . Those who are interested in submitting research proposals and/or evaluating grant proposals are encouraged to check the OPTA website (https://www .ohiopt .org/page/ GrantApp2020) and listen to the presentation .
ACCEPTANCE AND EVALUATION
OF GRANT PROPOSALS
Currently, grant applications are being accepted for the 2020 cycle until Friday, July 31, 2020 . The Committee will assemble a group of reviewers who are qualified to review and evaluate them to select proposals that can be funded by OPTA . Investigators whose proposals are selected for fund awards will be invited and recognized at OPTA 2020 LEAP meeting, September 25, 2020 . Thank you to Dawn Westfall, who oversees the grant review process, distributing grant proposals among reviewers, and following up with grant recipients .
