courage, and compassion. Successful candidates must demonstrate that they are dedicated to personal and profes- sional accountability and willing to continue to learn and perfect their skills.
I believe very strongly in hiring good people and getting out of their way. A leader must be present and engaged. It is important to set clear expectations and make sure employees know what is expected of them. In turn, employees need to be recognized for their accom- plishments and given the opportunity to grow. Providing a clear path for career development and giving the employee the tools, training, and opportunity
to reach their goals is paramount to maintaining motivation and a high level of performance.
How would you describe your management style?
I believe very strongly in being a devel- opmental leader. It is critically important to assure that we are developing strong, confident leaders within our depart- ments and our industry. I strive to be present and engaged in our organization with a keen eye for opportunities to enhance our personnel’s learning, growth and development.
Some of the greatest challenges in lead- ing a contemporary fire department are reduction in funding with an increase for service demands, increase personal safety for first responders, and changing the culture with regard to post traumatic stress and suicide in the fire service.
What do you consider the most challenging issues facing the U.S. fire service?
Firefighter health and safety continues to be a challenge for the fire service. Cancer, stroke, heart attacks, and now suicide, continue to take the lives of firefighters. The increase in violence across the country has resulted in our personnel being on the front line and in harm’s way. Many agencies are outfitting personnel with body armor; others are considering arming their personnel. These things come at a cost, both monetary and non-monetary. The fire service continues to see instances of hazing, sexual harassment, and bullying inside organizations. Some of these incidents have resulted in the ultimate loss. These are challenges that we must meet head on; we must win; our lives depend on it. u
