Page 91 - The Ancestry of Francis Bryan (1770-1863)
P. 91

I first began my genealogy research in 2011. Initially I believed that we had to be related to the descendants of Morgan Bryan. The only available member of their family with whom I could create a feasible bond was their son John Bryan. He is still the one untraceable son. There are many theories but even to date I have not seen any conclusive evidence of his descendants. For a good year I was bent on making my argument for this relationship.
Here is the argument as I designed it in 2011.
1. The property of Phoebe Woodruff's parents was adjacent to that of Morgan Bryan and Martha Strode. The proximity of the Woodruffs to the Bryan Settlement makes it likely that Francis and Phebe Woodruff met each other because of his relationship to Morgan and Martha. How else did they meet?
2. Francis is listed as a head of household in the Salisbury District of Rowan county in 1790, the same district as other members of Morgan’s family, in the heart of the Bryan settlement. He is not found listed as a poll in the 1791 Rowan County tax assessment because I believe that he had already purchased his property in Ashe County and that he did not own property in Rowan County in 1791, but only in Ashe County.
3. Phebe and Francis named their first born son, Morgan, a VERY uncommon name for that time. People named their children after their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.
