Dear explorer
The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry, according to Robbie Burns. Or, for those South of the Border our schedule for this issue was jogging along very nicely when suddenly everything went pear-shaped!
With so many fab Vintage events going on throughout February and March, I thought we’d not theme the issue, this time round, and just hang loose. Then 10th January 2016 happened.
Once we’d picked ourselves up off the floor, we thought we’d just have to mark the passing of the The Prettiest Star in some appropriate way for
Vintagexplorer. Well, the Gods of Vintage were smiling down, and it turns out there is still a last chance to see the remarkable David Bowie Is... exhibition in the Netherlands, just as we are off there to take part in Amsterdam’s Design Icons over Valentine’s weekend! Read up on both Dutch spectaculars – and check out the Bowie song titles headlining each article, sprinkled through this issue like stardust. (That’s Ziggy Stardust of course...)
Amsterdam isn’t our only port of call this issue. You want Europe’s oldest Vintage market? Of course you do, that’s why we bring you Brussels Design Market. Not to mention Sywell Aerodrome’s Atomic Festival, the Midcentury Modern show in Dulwich and some amazing auction news – everything from Star Wars figures to beautiful jewellery to the lost treasure of eight Brough Superior motorcycles discovered on Bodmin Moor. You can’t say we don’t get around!
Plus, let us introduce you to two great European designers: one who you’ll have to hunt down – and one whose pieces you may already own without knowing it! The sexy chairs of Swedish designer Arne Norell may be new to you, but industrial design genius Dieter Rams? You know that old record player you had with the transparent plastic lid...? Guess who dreamed that up? And guess what else he dreamed up? Oh
blimey, we do give you good stories!
And to the great David, what can we say? You loved Vintage before Vintage was. You created some of your own iconic Vintage looks along the way.
Here’s to you, Starman, hail and farewell!
