But for Jez Speed, it was the incredible set designs by Ken Adam that turned a passing fancy into a lifelong obsession I STARTED OUT this issue with VE Day in mind, as it would be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe, back on 8th May 1945. It was an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life who saw us through that dark and terrifying period. Little did I, or any one of us know that we ourselves would be beginning a war with an invisible enemy in 2020, and once again be in a situation where we are relying on the sacrifice, courage and care of others – in particular our doctors and nurses. I know that the large majority of those reading this issue will be like ourselves, a small businesses and self employed, which brings with it enormous uncertainty. Our trade is fragile at the best of times, and many will struggle to make ends meet. So, with the likelihood of people spending a bit more time in front of their computers over the next few months, I’ll be encouraging a lot more online interaction through the trade. We’ll be keeping you up-to-date online as events unfold, and be re-running some of your favourite articles – including our very popular and now sold out, ‘Bowie’ issue – to help keep you busy. I hope you’ll enjoy this Flip-book issue which includes a great selection of interesting articles relating to the wartime years, plus a couple of re-runs from one of my personal favourites: VE no.3 The Space Age Issue. You can also click through to our fantastic advertisers, who despite the current circumstance, have still run their adverts in support of VE – I can’t thank you enough for your generosity! In the meantime, if we can help your business in any way, perhaps by letting buyers know you’re still ‘virtually’ open for business, then please do get in touch. Hopefully as you’re reading this we’ll all be a little clearer as to what help we’ll be receiving to get through this, so that we can come out the other side with our health and businesses still intact. In the meantime, the message has never been clearer – be kind and be safe. Until next time... www.vintagexplorer.co.uk ve / April-May 2020 / 3 Karyn x
