AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2016
Dear explorer
You may notice something a little different about us this month...
Since Vintagexplorer magazine came quite swiftly to be known (both here at
VE Towers and amongst you, our dear readers and advertisers) as VE – simple, short and sweet – we thought it right to acknowledge that as we celebrate our five years of top- notch issues. So while we were giving ourselves a little design tweak, we’ve made the title official.
Our love of Vintage per se will never diminish of course, but then we’ve never
let ourselves be pigeon-holed into just one look. So we’ll continue to cover everything
to appeal to every vintage lover, Mid-century design nut, decorative diva, Mantiques maniac, Steampunk, Cyberpunk and creative upcycler out there – always including something extra to astonish the most outré of you!
In this issue we take you on our buying trip to Bruges and for a wander around
our eclectic VE offices; we highlight some great Decorative Fairs coming up at Bruton and Battersea and head East for a bit of
Mid-century modern at the Haggerston Show. You can chill out with the cool Nordic design couple Tapio Wirkkala and Rut Bryt, then warm up with a splash of vibrant colour with Riihimaki glass. We then return to Finland, by way of the USA, with the pure genius designs by Alvar Aalto that put the Artek (no, not Arctic) circle on the design map.
Half of VE’s subscribers are men, and
our Mantiques section is one of my favourite things to research. The name ‘Mantiques’ is tongue-in-cheek of course – it’s just as much for our lovely female readers, me included, just a shade more hunky... In this issue we take you inside the home of obsessive collector and sometime dealer, Harry Diamond – he’s definitely VE’s kind of man (making his stuff ideal for our new-look cover). And another interesting guy shares his passion for his 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix and much else besides – say hello to Victor Wild.
What’s with all these gender hang-ups anyway? Who cares? I’m just off to the Hotrod Hayride for my brother’s Stag Do – wish me luck!
Karyn
