 Machine Translation systems translate the text from English to the Hindi language required intense research in language processing.
We were awarded national
mission mode consortia
research projects ‘Anuvadaksh’:
English to Indian languages
machine translation system
(EILMT Phase-I and Phase-II)
from the Ministry of Electronics
and Information Technology
(MeitY), Government of India.
Designated as a project
leader in these projects, I came across newer research techniques and approaches like enhanced algorithms of language parsing, language generation, structure Interlingua, and translation memory. It gave me an opportunity to understand the deeper concepts of diverse Indian languages and their computational processing. At the same time, we were part of another consortia project for ‘Sampark’: Indian Language to Indian Language Machine Translation System (IL- ILMT). Parallelly, I was technically leading the ‘Speech-to-Speech dialogue-based machine translation system’, consortia project of C-DAC centers which provides bi-direction translation from Hindi to English and four Indian language

pairs. During this research, I observed the different levels of complexity, specific nuances and challenges along with the similarity in the behaviour of these Indian languages. Currently, we are working for the MT system from Hindi to the English Language in Judicial Domain. The Hindi language being my mother tongue drew my special attention for its understanding and processing for it.
This was the phase while working with multiple Indian languages, I realized the need for a more appropriate solution to overcome the language barrier. MTisasuitablesolutionforapersonwhois literate and can read the target language. The illiterate or uneducated are not able to take anybenefitfrommachinetranslationsolutions. An advanced approach can be planned in today’s technical era since most of the general mass/anticipated users are comfortable using technologies at least through smartphones. At the same time, we are moving into a virtual reality environment through gaming, movies and entertainment, which emerges the user into a rich environment of learning without any dependency on textual reading.
