Dr N. M. Suri, from Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh, developed magnesium-based particulate metal matrix composites (PMMC) for the automobile industry. He sent us some specimens of PMMC material to check their machinability. This material was tested under a hybrid machining technique. The hybrid machining technique is a combination of cryogenic machining and ultrasonic-assisted turning. Combined advantages of both processes helped in improving the chip breakability index and surface characteristics of magnesium-based PMMC. As we progressed, my supervisor started collaborating with many pioneer researchers across the globe, for instance, Dr Anish Roy from the Loughborough University (UK), Dr Grzegorz Krolczyk from the Opole University of Technology (Poland), Mr Johan Larsen from Danish Advanced Manufacturing Research Center(Denmark),MrVaibhavPhadnisfrom The AMRC with Boeing, the University of Sheffield (UK), Dr Catalin Pruncu from the Imperial College, London (UK), Dr Munish Gupta from the Shandong University (China), and R.A. Rahman Rashid from the Swinburne University of Technology Melbourne (Australia)
for better outcomes of this project. Local manufacturing industries such as Jaivel Aerospace, Ahmedabad, and Mac Power CNC Machines Limited Rajkot were also made aware by us about the recent research outcomes and their potential benefits. The expectedoutcomeofmyresearchisreadyto deliver cryogenic machining setup, which can be retrofitted to an existing range of machine tools. Another fruitful outcome is increased awareness regarding the advantages of cryogenic machining among small and medium-sized enterprises. In general, less power consumption, reduced carbon footprints, a prolonged life cycle of components due to better surface characteristics, an increase in tool life, and a healthy working environment for the workers under cryogenic machining echo its sustainable significance over conventional machining practices. Manufacturing industries has enormous potential for generating better life, wealth, jobs, and better product quality. The “new” industry must consider sustainability by adopting such processes. This is only possible through innovation and entrepreneurship.
