          Background

In beverage manufacturing and fi ne
          chemical production, processing
          equipment which include fi ltration
systems are cleaned or sanitized using
process water. The process water is
          combined with sanitizing or cleaning
agents to prevent microbial growth and
removal of residuals. This process water
          is used for pre-clean-in-place (CIP)
fl ushing, as make-up water for the CIP
solution and for post-CIP rinsing with
equipment such as, cross fl ow fi ltration
systems. Cross fl ow fi ltration systems
used for making low alcohol beverages
are cleaned and sanitized with chlorine-
free process water since their fi lters
are sensitive to chlorine exposure. In-
coming plant water, with 3ppm chlorine
as a disinfectant, must be treated to
remove chlorine before being utilized as
process water with these fi lters. Carbon
fi ltration is typically used to produce
          chlorine-free process water.
