Ayyappa Season:
The Divinity of Devotion
By Nandan Anoop
Swami Saranam!
The months of November and December (also known as Vrischika Masam) are dedicated to Swami Ayyappan,
the godly epitome of truth and dharma. According to the Vedas, human beings uniting with God (Paramatma)
is the ultimate spiritual purpose of life. Different kinds of
yogas such as Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Gnana Yoga etc. help us to reach Paramatma. The Ayyappa Season (or Ayyappa Vratham) falls under Bhakti Yoga, but also embraces elements from other yogic pathways. Using devotion to bring out the divinity in humans is the aim of Ayyappa Vratham.
Worshipping Swami Ayyappan during Ayyappa Vratham helps us transform ourselves and shows us a clear pathway towards Paramatma. While observing the Vratham, we’re required to show selflessness, love, and compassion to fellow human beings, as God is in everyone.
The Ayyappa Season lasts around 41 days. The idea is to show discipline in our worship of God continuously so that it becomes a habit. As they say, discipline on a daily basis forms the good habit; good habit forms good character and good character determines our destiny.
And just like any other year, The Sri Guruvayurappan Temple of Dallas is celebrating this year’s “Mandala Kalam” in its entirety while carefully implementing all the necessary COVID-19 protocols and guidelines. The temple has taken appropriate measures to safeguard the health and wellness of our devotees!
