 My Story
Vidya Sethumadhavan - Education committee admin
Hello everyone! I am Vidya Sethumadhavan. I am excited to share my story in the December edition of Mayilpeeli. My family and I moved to Dallas in 2012 after spending fourteen years in Michigan. We are grateful for a lot of great things that we have experienced in the eight years we have been here in Dallas; one of those is being a devoted member of Sri Guruvayurappan Temple of Dallas.
My earliest memory of the G.O.D Kids class is an afternoon class with our two boys, Varun and Vivek Nair. At the time, G.O.D Kids was in its second year of being founded, Sri Guruvayurappan Temple was in a small, rented space in the strip mall across the current location of our temple. It was around 4:45 pm and the minute I walked in, I felt like I was transported to a temple near my home in Kerala. The scent of the incense sticks and the oil mixed in along with the aroma of prasadam being prepared by the priest in the cramped kitchen at the back was exhilarating, to say the least. I felt so close to Sri Guruvayurappan, literally and figuratively. Fifteen minutes later, I watched Varun and Vivek participating in prayers, which transitioned into a storytelling session lead by Dr. Srinivasan. About ten minutes later, I watched them learn how to read and write in Malayalam. The sound of the repetitive chants of the swarangal and vyanjanangal sounded like music to my ears and I knew then that I wanted to be a part of the G.O.D Kids Class.
My involvement in G.O.D Kids class has been rewarding. My drive to bring our students closer to understanding what makes them a Hindu required me to self-reflect on how much of being a Hindu I was. My desire to help our students understand the significance of the stories they heard each week required me to go back and read the stories to learn about it rather than entertain myself. Finally, watching many students showcase their talents without inhibition inspired me to shape the G.O.D Kids Class program into an avenue for our students to continue to display pride
and commitment towards keeping our culture, traditions, beliefs, and language alive for generations to come.
