The FEPOWs – Far Eastern Prisoners of War – were finally released after the surrender of Japan in August 1945. The losses incurred by the 135th Regiment make grim reading: 67 men were killed in action or died of wounds and a further 159 died while prisoners of the Japanese. It is estimated that of the 40,000 in total who were incarcerated after the fall of Singapore, some 28% did not survive, compared to only 4% who prisoners of the Germans.
This experience of being a captive of the Japanese was to be one of the key moments of Alan’s life and one of the main reasons for producing this brief biography. He
