Tizer Meats, co-founded by husband and wife, Matt and Anita Elvbakken, has been a name in the Helena area since 93’. They started out as a mobile business
but quickly grew into one of the most well known butchers in town. The way they describe their business is a “gate to plate” process. They are the start to finish of slaughtering, processing and selling meat. While they are mostly known for meat processing, Tizer Meats is also a market selling packaged meat, cheese, eggs, and other grocery items. They have been in their current location at 2805 York Road where there is “never a dull moment.”
To say they have been busy is quite the understatement.
Matt and Anita are thankful for the success of their business. People tend to burn out, but after being in the business for over 25 years, they still love it and are “happy to still be here.” Though the pandemic has hit small businesses in
the area, Tizer Meats has been impacted “very positively.” During the time when grocery stores were running out of meats, Tizer still had plenty. They have started
to see a “different mindset” in people and how they buy and store meat. The commonality of people having freezers full of meat and having it to cook for families is making a comeback.
In addition to the mindset shift, Tizer
was fortunate to receive CARES funding through the government, granting them enough to keep them supported throughout this time. Through funding, Tizer was able to update much needed equipment and assist with the influx of business. Matt says, “we must have been a well-kept secret. Since April, we have seen more foot-traffic than when we first opened.” The hope is that people will become less dependent on grocery stores for their meat and turn to local butchers
such as Tizer, which Matt and Anita believe will become a new trend.
Tizer Meats has been a success in the last 25 years and throughout COVID, which they credit to the community for their endless support. Expanding on the core support, with this newly shifted mindset in addition to funding, the new era of butchers is looking bright for Tizer Meats.
