                                    38SANCTUARYDue to its remoteness, Chiribiquete had long been a refuge for its vast amount of biodiversity, as well as an important natural biological corridor which connected other protected areas. This makes Chiribiquete a key territory for the conservation of the northern Colombian Amazon.The Nukak are desperate to return home, so they can thrive once more as self-sufficient people - but, given the dangers, the authorities need to take urgent action to ensure that Colombian law is upheld and the Nukak can live safely on their land.For the past century, Chiribiquete%u2019s indigenous communities have lived with an awareness%u2014and fear%u2014of the outside world. Some have headed deeper into the unknown seeking private solitude, and cutting off from the rest of the world.Protection of Chiribiquete is ongoing and paramount. Suspension of mining licenses in the park%u2019s peripheries, known as the buffer zone were issued in 2013. At present, there is no tourism allowed inside the park.The lack of infrastructure has traditionally deterred illegal mining, poaching and deforestation operations. But as the world population%u2019s demand for materials increases along with connectivity, and technology, Chiribiquete%u2019s boundaries are dissolving, placing this unique landscape placing this unique landscape under threat.Each month, gangs of illegal miners, poachers and loggers recce Carijona territory. Each year, Chiribiquete%u2019s boundary zones are further eroded by deforestation. 100 YEARS OF SOLITUDETHE FINAL SKINThe older caterpillar forms have a gland located on their thorax that emits a strong order when threatened, which some describe as rancid butter. The hairs on their body also can irritate predators once touched.
