was elected state

in 1876, and in
1877 was appointed U.S. Marshal for the State of Colorado. In 1888 he was appointed superintendent of the San Carlos Indian Reservation and was instrumental in keeping the famous Apache Chief Geronimo from being returned to the reservation and put in a prison on an island near Florida. Wilcox died on May 25, 1911 in a
hospital in Denver. While Wilcox was shrewd
with investments that brought him wealth, he
was “in want” at age 86 when he passed on. In 1999, Douglas County
Government named its County Building at 301
Wilcox, “The Wilcox Building.”

N. Gilbert, whose death in November 1948 shocked town residents. Gilbert was born at Gilbert Station, Kansas
on February 28, 1886 before moving to Douglas County where he lived on a ranch southwest of Castle Rock and served as a county commissioner. A few years later he moved into Castle Rock and was elected Mayor in April of 1948. He was survived by his wife, two married daughters, a granddaughter, four brothers and four sisters.
While I was researching Gilbert Street, I came across an article about the death of little Jack Noyes Gilbert, the ve year old son of Mr. & Mrs. David Gilbert, of Cherry, Colorado, during the week of May 25, 1917. Little Jack had asked his mom if he could go to the barn to see his father. Forty- ve minutes later his body was found near the barn. It is suspected that on the way to the barn little Jack stopped at the workshop where there’d been a re that day. He was playing with the live coals when his clothing caught on re.
“Jack was an attractive and precocious child and it will be very hard on the a icted family to bear up under the burden of his sudden and untimely death.” --Record Journal May 25, 1917
