Mollie Hemingway is the American conservative author, columnist, and political commentor who is the editor-in-chief of the online magazine “The Federalist.” I have known Mollie’s father, Larry Ziegler, a retired Lutheran minister for many years, and he is very proud of his daughter’s accomplishments over the years. ~ Lora Thomas
was named after John Cantril the week of November 27, 1931.
He was described as one of Douglas County’s
oldest and
best-loved
citizens who
“crossed the
Great Divide” at age 89. He had come to Colorado in 1862 and to Douglas County a few years later. Nothing else was reported about Mr. Cantril.
and Elbert County
are named after
Samuel Hitt Elbert, who was a Republican that
was appointed territorial governor of Colorado by President Grant on March 9, 1873, but was succeeded by former Governor McCook in 1874. Elbert was born on April 3, 1833 in Logan County, Ohio; his father was a physician and surgeon. Elbert studied law at Ohio Wesleyan and was admitted to the bar in Dayton, Ohio. He also practiced
law in Nebraska before he came to Colorado in 1862. In 1862 he was appointed secretary of the Colorado Territory by President Abraham Lincoln, serving under Governor John Evans. He served on the Colorado Supreme Court in 1876. He married
Josephine Evans, daughter of former Governor John Evans, in June, 1865.
The couple had one child who died in infancy. Governor Evans passed away November 27, 1899, in Galveston, Texas.
is named after the Castle Rock Town
Marshal Raymond Burr
Lewis, who was killed on
February 14, 1946 while
trying to arrest a fugitive
wanted out of Denver for
shooting two Denver police o cers. The complete story of that sad day was recounted in an article in the Castle Rock AreaNewsletters.com that appeared in
the October 2021 issue. This is the same story that explained the two bullet holes at the B & B Café.
Now, when you drive the streets of Castle Rock, I hope you have a greater appreciation of the people who were so instrumental in the town in which you live today. l
