Staying in Gratitude with Holiday Parenting Time
by Teddi Ann Barry, Esq., Divorce in Colorado
Welcome November!
Thanks for the beautiful colors! Thank you for the cooler weather! Thank you for football and family time!
Theholidayseasoncanoftenbringdif cultyforfamilies. Here are 4 ways to help you with a Happy Thanksgiving for your family.
1. Communication is Everything
Don’t wait until the last minute to decide where and how you
will spend the holiday. If you are a divorced parent, you likely have an order or agreements already in place. However you intend to spend the holiday, be clear and communicate your plan with one another – as parents – and then with the children and any family members who may be expecting something different of your family.
2. Keep It Simple
So often so many try and do everything in one day – we end
up so busy we have little time to remember to give thanks or spend quality time with those we are so thankful for in our lives. No one can be happy having Thanksgiving breakfast, lunch and 2 dinners in 5 different places. Whether you are hosting the holiday, travelling out of town, or planning a 4-home tour, nd ways to limit the activity and increase the peace.
3. Prioritize Expectations
Take time to prioritize and compromise. Don’t wait until the week of the holiday. Go for a walk, grab a coffee and sit in front of the re or turn off theTV and have a conversation with the family and nd out who has stronger reasons for spend- ing the holiday a special way and consider the possibilities. Also, keep in mind that we celebrate this holiday each year and there are many years ahead to spend in different ways.
4. Stay In Gratitude.
Take each day this month to be thankful for something. Say it aloud. Make sure those in your family hear you. Help them nd their gratitude to share. Suddenly, in gratitude, communication is easier, keeping it simple makes sense, and prioritizing expectations a joy.
