Flu Hits HarD in Colorado

This year’s u is partic-
ularly hard hitting, both in
Colorado and in the Denver
area. The CDC reports that
as recently as early January, there have been almost 1600 hospitalizations in the state due to in uenza.
It’s obvious, that if you are ill, you should not go to work or school, as the u is contagious for as long as seven days. And because it is so contagious, you will simply spread the virus to co-workers and friends. Re- ports suggest that even if you are caring for someone with the u, you should not go to work.
Health Tips:
1. Do not use tissues twice and don’t use hankies at all. You want to use tissues once for sneezes or coughing and then throw them away.
2. Forget the advice of sneezing into your sleeve. That’s not sanitary and you only end up carry germs around.
3. It’s not too late to still get a u shot. While it may not be totally effective (it’s about 30 percent effective) against this year’s strain, the experts are still recommending it.
4. Children under the age of 5 and adults over 65 are higher risk and need to take extra precautions.
5. The same is true for those with “asthma, chronic lung disease, heart disease, liver, blood, endocrine and metabolic disorders as well as various neurological conditions.”
Be Proactive
While you can’t control whether you encounter some- one with the u or pick up germs from surfaces, you can take proactive steps to reduce your risk. Make sure you consistently wash your hands and use hand sanitizers.
