My March article was about Douglas County Sheri  John Hammond, who served from 1946-1971– the longest tenure of any Douglas County Sheri . He has been described as “larger than life,” running a single-man o ce and didn’t wear a uniform or carry a sidearm until the 1960s. Initially he was paid $50 a month plus 8 cents a mile for the use of his personal vehicle (no marked patrol car!). He also served as the chief  re warden. He had no radio or adequate jail. body of Adolph Coors III was found in a dump near Shamballa in the western area of Douglas County on September 14, 1960. Mr. Coors had been kidnapped on February 9, 1960 in Je erson County. This month’s story is about the Coors case that ended in Douglas County.

That afternoon a State Trooper named George Hendricks found the truck belonging to the Coors Company with its engine running near a bridge over Turkey Creek by the intersection of Turkey Creek Road and Soda Lake Road near Morrison. The truck belonged to the Adolph Coors Company. On the west side of the bridge, blood spots had been located and collected as evidence. On the east side of the bridge, a brown Fedora- type hat, cap with a brim or bill, and eyeglasses were collected as evidence as well. 9, 1960 at 7:55AM, her husband left their Je erson County home for work at the brewery in the Je Co county seat of Golden. He never arrived. Mr. Coors, the 44-year old head of the Coors Brewing Company, was the grandson and namesake of founder Adolph Coors.
Later that morning a milkman discovered a truck belonging to the Coors Company parked on the bridge at Turkey Creek. He honked then drove around it. When the milkman  nished his route, the truck was still on the
