Some of these categories warrant their own sep- arate le. Some, like your important numbers, can be maintained in a small notebook. A good idea to have in case something might happen and a family member might have to step in to help. For the more important documents, you may want to keep the originals in a safe-deposit box. If you feel you need to keep a copy, then keep copies in your les.
• Keep your les simple: i.e., don’t get to speci c with your system or you’ll have more les then you’ll truly want to deal with. For instance, if you need to maintain travel les -- make a general le, Travel.
• If you don’t have time to le at the moment: Then keep 4 baskets, wire ones are the best: To Do, To Pay, To File, and To Read (for this you might want a larger basket with handles).
• Make ling a habit: Find a time during the week toemptyyourToFilebasketand lethoseneeded papers away. If you take this time each week to le, then it won’t take that long.
• Fine-tune later: At a later date, take a look at what’s in your les. Usually, you nd that a le is either underused or bulging. If you nd that you have only one or two things in a le folder, nd or create a le that’s broader in scope. Alterna- tively, if you nd that a folder is over owing with contributions, create subcategories, either by topic or by dates.
