be 32x70 feet with a large cellar and to be “completed in rst-class style.” The work would be rushed through because goods for the store were already arriving! In 1908 Triplett established a hardware store in Castle Rock which he and his sons built into quite a thriving business.
It’s interesting to note that one of Triplett’s sons, Edgar, followed in his father’s public service footsteps and served as the clerk of the Castle Rock town council, Undersheri during Prohibition and was a charter member of the Castle Rock Volunteer Fire Department.
One of Triplett’s daughters, 10-year old Grace, passed away while Triplett was the County Judge in 1899, and the news article reported that she had always been in poor health. She died of Pleura-pneumonia, but “death was hastened by an infection of the heart to two years standing, which followed an attack of rheumatism.”
The article in Castle Rock Journal, dated January 22, 1899, said, “She was patient in su ering, heroic in endurance, unsel sh in action. Even pain could not crush the happy disposition and in moments of ease, she was the joy and sunshine in our home. Little Grace knew that death was near and with a smile on her face she said last Saturday, “This is my last day on earth.” An image that spawns a tear...
The Castle Rock Journal reported on the April 20, 1918 death of Triplett: “In his death Douglas County has lost one of her best and most respected citizens.”
Triplett’s wife, Hattie, survived her
husband by seven years, passing away suddenly on March 20,
1925. She was survived by her aged mother, brother, three children
and four
grandchildren.
Again, a quote of the news article in the Record Journal on March 27, 1925 said, “Mrs. Triplett was one of the best known and beloved women of the county. A most devoted daughter and mother, a loyal friend, an untiring worker in the church and a patriotic citizen, it could well have been said of her ”She opened her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness: (Proverbs 31:26)””
I bet after you’ve read this article you’ll agree with me that Mr. Triplett was just a citizen who earned the trust and respect of his fellow citizens, and they asked him to take on civic responsibilities for them. His daughter, Grace, and his wife, Hattie, seem to embody the same kindness and Christian character as George Sr. who passed the responsibility of civic duty
to his son, Edgar who wrote a History of the Castle Rock Fire Dept. on its 25th anniversary in February 1904. I bet you will see that discussed in a future story!
My thanks and recognition to Julia, Joan and Alyssa from the Historic Archives section of the Philip S. Miller Library in Castle Rock. They are always ready to help me with my research, and they are available to help you as well.
