Why do we even have lawns?
Lawns, like carpet, were, once upon a time, seen as a sta- tus symbol. The concept came from the sprawling lawns of Eastern European mansions and became a standard in the humid and developing eastern and southern U.S. Lawns were perpetuated by the 1950s suburbia explosion of homeownership coupled with the white picket fence.
But we are not in 1550 or 1950 anymore.... Gone are the days of the sprawling lawn and white picket fence. For the West, blooming hyssops, bristlecone pines and rocked patios are some of the elements of the desired Castle Rock landscapes.
