Now is the Time to Get Started Article provided by W “Yardening”
ith all the snow we had this winter, the season feels a little late this year. Starting good lawn care now will help prevent problems in July and August. If you haven’t fertilized and aerated yet, that should be done soon. Now that the weather is warming up, turn on your sprinkler system if you have one. Visually inspect all elements to make sure nothing is clogged, broken, or leaking. Water between the hours of midnight and 6:00am if possible and make sure you follow
any watering guidelines that may be in place for your neighborhood. The majority of all turf problems are due
to either over- or underwatering. Don’t just “set it and forget it”! Your landscape needs a di erent amount of
water throughout the season, so make sure your system is being adjusted accordingly. A good baseline for a
bluegrass lawn is 0.75”/week in April (if needed at all), 1”/week in May and June, 1.5”/week in July and August.
1”/week in September, and possibly 0.75”/week in October. Make sure you skip or reduce your watering after rain
or cooler weather to avoid overwatering. Now is also a great time to sharpen your mower blades. Blades should be sharpened at least once a year. Mow to a height of 3” and never remove more than a third of the grass blade at a time. Don’t forget to refresh any mulch in your landscape as well! Trees greatly bene t from having mulch underneath them. The mulch ring should ideally extend to the edge of the branch spread called the drip line. Make sure mulch is at least 6” away from the trunk and is 3-4” thick. Mulch helps prevent weeds, reduces evaporation so you can water less, and keeps soil temperatures cooler.
