Family:Lamiaceae
Teucrium is a genus of numerous species of very adaptable flowering
perennial herbs and shrubs. Wall germander, a short spreading shrub, is a
T.Albicaule T.Argutum popular member of the genus. All the plants in this genus are toxic and have
a medium to high toxicity level. Symptoms of toxic poisoning for both hu-
mans and animals could be vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, loss of appetite,
and possible liver damage. Handling these plants is considered safe, howev-
er when handling any toxic plant you should always wear gloves. Many Teu-
crium have been used in various herbal preparations like folk medicine and
T.Aroanium T.Botrys for weight loss, though some preparations are now banned. Also, some spe-
cies such as, T.polium and T.capitatum, are known to cause liver damage. If
you have any of these plants in your care, you should treat them with cau-
tion, and unless you are experienced with these plants, you should never eat
them. Teach children about the dangers they pose and never allow your pets
near them.
Family:Araceae
Calla is a genus of a single rhizomatous herbaceous perennial flower-
ing plant known as Water arum (C.palustris). All parts of Water arum are
toxic, though its berries and rhizomes are edible if dried. It has a low toxici-
ty level. Symptoms of toxic poisoning, for both humans and animals, could
be burning and swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, throat, and difficulty
speaking. Skin contact with the plants sap can cause irritation and if it gets
into the eyes it will cause irritation and redness. Although this plants poi-
sonous effects, on adults, are thought more as a mild inconvenience, chil-
dren and household pets, being much smaller, could experience more pain-
ful effects. So children should be told of the danger this plant poses and
pets should be firmly discouraged from eating or chewing any part of it.
Family:Araceae
Pistia is a genus of a single aquatic plant, the Water lettuce
(P.stratiotes), a flowering perennial, that floats on the water’s surface. It’s
considered non-toxic, if eaten in small amounts. However, eaten in large
amounts or consumed over a long period of time it can produce toxic
symptoms such as, stomach aches, throat irritation, swelling, and gastro-
intestinal discomfort. The water lettuce is found in inland canals and riv-
ers. It’s fast growing and invasive, forming a huge thick mat on the water’s
surface, clogging canals which hinder boating and depletes oxygen levels
which in turn kills fish. On the other hand, it makes an ideal ornamental
plant for ponds, aquariums and water gardens and in some cultures is
used in traditional medicine and fodder for cattle.
