Finally, Dr. Avrum Richler, OD, PhD, FAAO (St John’s, NL), was honoured with a Life Fellowship award from
the Academy in recognition of his long-time membership in the Academy and distinguished service to the sci-
ence and art of optometry. Dr. Richler is a UM grad (1947), with a PhD from the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial
University (1979), and an MA (Department of Religious Studies, Memorial University, 2011). Dr. Richler practiced
as an optometrist for 70 years, before retiring in 2017.
In addition to the award winners mentioned above, Dr. Chris Hudson from UW was one of three speakers
honoured in this year’s Monroe J. Hirsch Memorial Research Symposium, “The Eye as a Mirror of the Brain”
(Figure 8), and Dr. Kristine Dalton, Claudia Sikorski, and Dr. Trefford Simpson’s research talk “Does a His-
tory of Concussion Matter” (UW) was selected by the Academy Communications Committee as one of 10 most
newsworthy posters at the 2017 Annual Meeting.
