In 1917 the architectural firm of Kielinel and Elliot was
commissioned to Miami in order to build El Jardin, the winter
home for Mr. John Binley, the President of the Pittsburg Steel
Co. El Jardin is the earliest known Mediterranean Revival
work remaining in Miami. This Renaissance palace design of
Spanish Churrigurisque, Moorish influence, and Baroque
style broke the firm’s pattern and influenced the style adapted
to Coral Gables. The Craftsmanship of involved stone decora
tion and elaborate iron grillwork is the trademark of John B.
Orr. El Jardin is a National Registered site and, in 1962,
became Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart.
