Dear Parents,
We are now in full session, so allow me to welcome you to the 2008-2009 Academic Year. As I walk through
each of the schools, I definitely sense excitement and energy in anticipation of this new year of learning. The
faculty, administrators and I look forward to seeing you at Back to School Nights during which we will share
our plans for the year.
This year is an important one for all of us since it is the year of self-study and reflection on our life as a
Sacred Heart School. Sacred Heart educators have long held that “values taken for granted or left
unarticulated become inoperative.” (Preamble to the original Goals and Criteria). During the course
of the year we will be coming to you as Parents of the Sacred Heart to invite you to join us as a
community to consider how we live the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart education. I encourage
each of you to re-read this most essential document, http://www.sofie.org/resourees/other/.
Pay particular attention to the criteria which capture in very precise language the essence of
Sacred Heart education. The year of self-study is actually an invitation to “probe the depths of
the Goals and Criteria that they might be prophetic orientations leading us to hope, a hope that
believes in the goodness of each individual, a hope that believes in the goodness of humanity, a
hope that believes in and trusts the love of the Heart of God." (Introduction to 2005 Goals and
Criteria) In the end you as parents, and we as educators, want to root your daughters in this very hope. The
process of self-study will strengthen our partnership on behalf of your daughters.
Welcome to a year full of promise and hope. If you can join us, we will have two Masses of the Holy Spirit
next Tuesday. Grades 1-6 will go to St. Hugh at 11:00 a.m. and Grades 7-12 will have a 1:00 p.m. Mass at St.
Hugh.
