The 2008 - 2009 Carrollton school year has
been an eventful nine months. The year began
with an exciting start; amid passionate political
standoffs, culminating in the election of the
first African-American president, and a historic
plunge of the economy, Americans had much
to deal with. Hurricanes ravaged many of our
island neighbors to the south. International
affairs were also a hot topic; a new American
president reopened the books on Israel-
Palestine relations, and the buzz surrounding
the Olympics in Beijing pulled China into
perspective.
While these events took place on the world
stage, Carrollton dealt with them in its own
way. Many clubs and groups school-wide
participated in fundraising, and food and
clothing drives to benefit hurricane victims
throughout the region, particularly Cuba and
Haiti. In the high school, the commitment to
help those less fortunate continued long after
the immediate need for hurricane relief was
satisfied. The High School Human Rights Club
touched on the subject of human trafficking
and immigration - a sensitive but relevant
topic.
The entire student body actively participated
in many service projects including visiting the
elderly, spending time with underprivileged
children, walkathons benefitting a variety
of local and international causes, and
environmental clean-ups.
