MAKER SPACE
By Stephanie St. Louis ‘04
Students from across the school – Primary, Intermediate, Junior High, and the Upper School (especially our RECS and Visual Arts students)
- enjoyed lots of hands-on learning at our makerspaces this year.
Primary students in 3rd grade practiced using drills and hammers while creating beautiful Halloween and fall-themed string art. They also learned about electrical circuits and made Mother’s Day cards
that lit up when activated. In the Intermediate, our Grade 4 girls digitized their hand-drawn designs and used the laser cutter and engraver to etch them onto their Jesse Tree ornaments. For the annual 6th Grade Cell Phone Stand Project and Competition, each 6th Grade student came up with her own unique design for a cell phone stand, developed a working prototype, and then created the final product out of wood, using lots of critical- thinking and problem-solving skills along the way. Junior High students worked on awesome projects at the Innovation Center on the Duchesne campus, such as converting a mountain bike to an e-bike with a hub motor.
In the Upper School, RECS students developed award-winning AT Engineering projects, vacuum- formed their CAD-designed, 3D-printed figures to make chocolate molds, built some of the components for their Rube Goldberg machine, learned how to solder, flew drones, and finished a variety of other engineering projects that required shop equipment to complete. AP Art and Design students engraved plates to use in the printing press, turned 2-D artworks into 3-D masterpieces, welded internal structures for their sculptures, assembled gravity-defying wall displays, and much more.
Carrollton’s CarrollSun solar car team sent 2 cars
to compete at the 2023 SunChase Solar Go-Kart Race, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University. The team’s many hours and late nights at the shop paid off, as not only did both cars finish all 4 races of the competition (a feat accomplished by about half of the cars that entered), they also earned awards for 1st place in a sprint, 3rd place for overall sprint time,
and 2nd and 3rd places for presentation. 162
