Carrollton Debate 2022-2023

The Carrollton debate team had an incredible season this year, reaching the elimination rounds of several national tournaments. This summer, Carrollton sent two students to the University
of Michigan Seven Week debate institute to participate in pre-season research and practice debates. After the camp at Michigan, Carrollton hosted a three week camp to familiarize students with team strategies for the season. Students learned about the year’s topic, which is emerging technology in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The first varsity tournament of the year was the New Trier tournament in Chicago. Thanks to the help of our wonderful coaches, the team of Saramelia Lopez ‘24 and Lauren Nieto ‘24 reached the double octafinals, and the team of Daniella Roos ‘24 and Sofia Casado ‘23 reached the quarterfinals
of the tournament. This tournament set the tone for the rest
of the season, where the varsity debaters reached the late elimination rounds of the Montgomery Bell Academy, Stanford, Michigan State University, and Pinecrest tournaments. The team finished the season off strong at the National Debate Coaches Association National Championships in Palos Verdes, California. The team of Lauren Nieto ‘24 and Daniella Roos ‘24 reached the octafinals of the tournament, meaning that they became one of the best 16 teams in the nation.
The Junior Varsity and Novice debaters also had an incredibly successful season, traveling all over the country for national
tournaments. Junior Varsity and Novice debaters debated in the elimination rounds of the Stanford and Marist tournaments. They also attended the First and Second Year National Championship at Woodward Academy in Georgia, where the team of Lauren Nieto ‘24 and Sofia Barrera ‘25 debated in the octafinals.
The debaters ended the year with a debate party to thank
the coaches, gifting them a poster full of pictures from their memories of the season. The team is incredibly grateful for their guidance and leadership, as the team’s success would not have been possible without them. The Carrollton debaters are looking forward to another great season full of unforgettable experiences next year.
