Play like a Girl By: Coach Liz Whitby
At first glance what stands out are the oversize matching bows they all have sticking out
from their caps. Or maybe you might catch the higher pitched squeals coming from the
dugout as they cheer for each other. They may be the only team that does cartwheels as
they take the field, and likely the only ones drawing hearts in the infield dirt. But what really
deems them unique is not their pink bats, gloves and helmets or their pigtails hanging down
their backs. This team is GOOD, impressively good. Yes, this team of 4-6 year old t-ball
playing girls really gets it.
Sure, they have their moments of admiring their big hits before actually running to first base.
Truly, they are hitting admirably. And it may take them a little longer to put their hats back
on as they weave the ponytail through the back. However it is their focus when the coach
yells "Baseball Ready!" and they are poised hands on knees, ready to pounce like horses
out of the gate, the moment the opposing batter makes contact with that ball,
that makes one take notice.
You might think it is impossible to make six outs per inning. These girls don't think so, because
in a game where every player bats every inning, they aim to get every batter out. They're
making plays to first with an instinctual automation, and Irapping the ball in their gloves like

Don't tell them they're the only all girls team in the league. I don’t think they've
noticed they're playing teams that are 90% boys. Just keep telling them
