By Isabella Rose Labrador '24
Despite the challenges o f the pandemic, several Carrollton service clubs have remained active in fulfilling their mission to help those in need.
Isabela Delgado '24, established her club, the Power o f Play, at the beginning o f this school year and despite the obvious challenges with the pandemic, her club has been successful in satisfying its mission. Isabella's club focuses on providing children who are in the hospital with opportunities for play.
"Studies show that play has therapeutic values, and this club aims
to boost patient recovery and wellness, one happy child at a time. To do this, we prepare and deliver packaged activity kits and entertainment for kids, run toy drives, and collect contributions to fill pediatric patient needs," said Isabella.
The Power o f Play club conducted a toy drive in December to benefit children in Nicklaus Children's hospital. The club raised
$ 1,000 through both in person and online donations, and received more than 100 toys.
In January, Isabella conducted a 'Uoy Kit" drive for Joe DiMaggio children's hospital. Upper School students donated toys, books, games and arts and crafiis activities for the children in this hospital as a way to brighten their days.
Some other service clubs which have been able to continue their mission are: Caring for Kids club with president Mairead Gatcliffe '21, Giving to the Grove with president Carolina Gaston 21, and Live Like Bella with president Ava Gonzalez '24.
"We raised $300 to fund the children's Christmas dinner and we are currently working on a project to deliver used laptops that the Carrollton tech team does not need so that the kids have improved technology to work with," wrote Mairead Gatcliffe.
'This year has been a year where I have had to think outside of the box in order to continue service through my club. My club is fulfilling its mission this year through virtual drives and activities that don t require contact," wrote Ava Gonzalez.
MLE, Walk with Me, a club founded by Sabina Conseugra 21 supports The Miami Learning Experience School - a school for children and adults who have special needs. One oftheir biggest annual fundraisers is a community walk. Sabina wrote. The pandemic has made it difficult since our walk typically has many people, however, we were still able to sell shirts, have a Zoom session with MLE students and participate in a virtual activity with them.
Although most clubs couldn't be as active as they would have liked, many hosted fundraisers to benefit their causes including: Heart and Butterflies (teddy bear car drive), Mary's Meals (jewelry sale), Unidos Colombia and Venezuela (baby formula and canned food drive) and Corazones Unidos (Chill -N Ice cream fundraiser).
