Brain Needs Answers
7. World Around Me Needs are about feeling ok about the things we are doing,
the places we are going and the things happening around us.
We can see this as ‘task or experience safety’ (in the same way that People
Around Me Needs are about ‘relational safety’).
The two different aspects of the World Around Me Need/s are:
a) To feel capable – to feel I can do a good job of what I am being
asked to do. This is also about feeling generally capable in life and
feeling I can overcome any barriers that come my way. It is also
about feeling good about my strengths and accepting any difficulties
– knowing how to manage them.
b) To have a sense of control over what is happening to me. (People who do
not have a sense of control can sometimes become ‘controlling’ in order to
meet the need). This aspect of World Around Me Needs is also about feeling
enough certainty over what will be happening and what is expected of me.
