What really connecting sounds like
It needs the adult to FEEL what the child is feeling and to empathise –
even when s/he is doing something that really isn’t ok for others.
The anti-social bit can be tackled in follow-up when the child is in
rational brain.
A child shoves a chair hard, causing a glass to smash to the floor
▪ Things must be going really wrong for you to react like that.
▪ It’s tough to feel that upset / angry (read child’s emotion).
▪ Don’t worry. Let’s work this out together – I’m on your side.
(N.B.This doesn’t mean it’s ok to shove a chair – it’s just now ISN’T the time to problem-solve – don’t put your hand in a boiling kettle).
