Unit 12: Responding when things go wrong
What should I practise now?
Introducing the 10 Point Response Plan
SKILLS TO PRACTISE / STRENGTHEN RAG
1 When a child struggles, keep a picture of the Cycle of Stress-Based Behaviour in your mind.
2 Practice reframing what you see children say and do in terms of what unmet need they are
demonstrating – do they not feel liked or cared for? Do they not feel they count or matter? Do
they not feel capable? Are they feeling a lack of control over what happens to them?
3 Reflect on whether this is time for paramedic, surgeon or consultant as you go to support a child.
If either party is still emotional, then paramedic is the best option.
4 Practice saying some key mantras to yourself as a ‘Prep4Best’ strategy:
❑ Be curious, not furious.
❑ Unmet needs and missing skills underlie all unhelpful behaviours.
❑ You cannot help a person to do better by making them feel worse.
❑ When people feel better, they do better.
❑ Connect to Calm.
