P. 14

Key Points Summary

      1. The brain develops from back to front.

      2. The first areas to develop are basic functions such

             as vision and physical co-ordination.

      3. The pre-frontal cortex at the front of the brain is last to develop. It

doesn’t finish maturing until around 25 years old.

      4. This front part of the brain is responsible for some important skills

             known as ‘Executive Function Skills’.

      5. These skills help us to learn, play and get on with others.

      6. They also help us to prioritise, organise and get things done.

      7. Life can be pretty hard for people with weaker Executive Function

             Skills.

      8. With our strength-based approach, rather than seeing attributes

such as impulsiveness and rigid thinking as bad, we focus on when

they are helpful and when they are less helpful.
