The key issues with traditional approaches
It is understandable that people often turn to quick-fix solutions.
Sometimes people are keen to secure 1:1 support for a child because it
means the child is ‘well-managed’ for the moment. It makes life much easier
for everyone else around the child.
The trouble with ‘fixing for the moment’, is that:
▪ Missing (Executive Function) skills are not the focus, so are not built and
strengthened – the child continues to have weak skills and struggle.
▪ Unmet needs are not the key focus, so are not addressed. The child
continues to have unmet needs which exacerbate their struggles.
▪ Progress is not sustained – they may do well when the adult is around,
but they cannot manage when the support disappears.
▪ Problems pop back up year after year.
The following animation follows the story of Mrs Ritchie and a young girl
called Anya.
After some difficult moments, Mrs Ritchie makes a discovery – and it
changes how she works with Anya, with incredible results.
