Page 25 - Unit 8: Signs of Stress
P. 25
What are common adult responses? What drives them?
What is the impact of these responses on children’s self-concept?
Many of the phrases we use regularly in school can disempower young people and
cause them to feel bad about themselves. This compounds the issues.
Even if they do fix things in the short term, they don’t get to the real issue and so the individual
then often doesn’t make progress that lasts.
Come on! It’s not a big deal. It is only a party. There will be plenty
more of those in future.
What were you thinking? And what are our friends going to think!
If you cannot behave at school today, you certainly won’t be going
to that party.
Come on. If you behave yourself every day at school this week, I’ll
get you those trainers.
Don’t worry. I’ll have a word with them for you.
My goodness, you are slow as a snail! Come on – get on with it!!
I’ve had it with you. Just get to your room and keep out of my sight
for a bit.
Come on. Forget it. Let’s just have a nice evening and watch a bit
of Gogglebox together.
If you had listened to me and got on with it, you wouldn’t be in this
mess now!
I’m now in trouble with the boss and have lost two days pay
because of you!
