What does this all mean to practice?
What this means to the way we should support children and young people
IT IS CRUCIAL TO HELP CHILDREN WORK OUT THE WHY BEHIND THEIR STRUGGLES
1. We need to help children work out the WHY behind any struggles. This will mean they are in a better
position to make positive changes.
2. By supporting children to find out the ‘why’, we help them to move from unconscious driven
behaviours to conscious control.
3. In practice, this means adults will be helping children to work out which of the 5C needs are unmet
and how they can be met in helpful ways. Adults will create a plan with the child so there is a clear
Pathway to Independence.
4. Adults will also be helping children to work out which of the Control Centre Skills they find hard and
plan ways to make it easier for now (scaffolds) and improve them for the future (teach skills). They
will create a plan with the child so there is a clear Pathway to Independence.
5. In practice, this means that finding the ‘why’ and being ‘Curious not Furious’ will be at the heart of all
work with children. Adults will be conscious of not ‘fixing for the moment’ and will always be planning
a Pathway to Independence for a child.
