The Empowerment Approach Modules
Module 1: Shifting Mindset: What is the best approach for supporting children and why?
This module looks at the issues around the use of traditional behaviourist approaches and the impact these can have over time. It goes
on to explore the key ingredients needed within an approach to secure long-term, sustainable progress whilst protecting the needs and
rights of all. The module finishes with an introduction to the Empowerment Approach, its key goals and how it aligns and differs from
other approaches.
Module 2: The Brain Needs Series: What does our brain need to be at its best?
This section presents a structure to understand the physical, emotional and cognitive needs we all have to be at our ‘Brain Best’. It
provides a set of tools to explore our unique needs along with strategies for meeting these sufficiently well to feel great and do well in
school, at home and within the community. Our simple structure, with accompanying visual resources, helps young people, their
families and other adults who care for them, understand differing needs well and be better placed to prepare ahead of time. It enables
young people to become strong self-advocates who can communicate their own needs in helpful ways, whilst recognising the needs of
others so they become more emotionally aware and better social thinkers.
Module 3: The Neurobiology Series: What happens when our brain experiences stress or struggles?
This module guides attendees through the neurobiology of success & struggles. It provides tools to support children & young people in
their understanding of the brain & body science underpinning helpful & unhelpful behaviours. It goes on to present strategies for taking
charge of our neurobiology, rather than leaving it to chance. The unit aims to help all adults build children’s understanding of
neurobiology so they can learn how to manage the stressors of life and build resilience & keep going when life gets tough.
Module 4: The Brain Skills Series: Executive Function: Skills for Life
Through this section, participants first look at different areas of cognition and consider ways to shine a light on strengths. The unit goes
on to explore the role of Executive Function Skills in helping people to learn, socialise and live at their best. It looks at the different
Executive Function Skills, how difficulties with them can hamper success and how to support people to do well. The course also
explores neurodifference and why some children may find some areas super easy and others a huge challenge. It goes on to look at how
to support children in their understanding of neuroplasticity and feel motivated for change.
