Strong Flexibility Checklist
SKILL I DEMONSTRATED THIS SKILL
I CAN BE EMOTIONALLY FLEXIBLE & LOOK AT THE WIDER PICTURE
When I experience unpleasant feelings such as sadness, jealousy, shame or
disappointment, I can remind myself that it will not last forever and I can soothe myself.
When things go wrong, I am able to react in a way that is about right for the size and
seriousness of the issue.
When I am upset by something, I can recognise accurately how big a deal the issue is.
When something is difficult or unpleasant, I can remember that experiencing a range of
emotions is normal and there will be happier moments ahead.
When things are not as I would like, I can take a wider perspective e.g. If I want pizza
but there is none left, I can soothe myself with thoughts that there will be other times to
eat pizza and there are other foods available which I can enjoy now.
When things do not turn out as I would have liked, I can recognise and focus on the
positives going on for me.
I CAN COMPROMISE
I can think of different ways to compromise that would mean everyone’s needs are met.
I can compromise: I am able to give up a bit of what I would like so that everyone’s
needs are met better.
I can be flexible enough to follow an instruction or direction given by someone else. I
can feel a sense of control over what happens to me, even when someone else is giving
the directions.
I can follow someone else’s way of doing something, even if it is different to the one I
felt was best.
